Installing Windows XP on Compaq Presario CQ50-142US

I have difficulty finding a Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 driver that will make my CQ50-142US built-in microphone work. With, 3.47.0.0 (2008/01/21), It can currently play music and it correctly mutes the speakers when I plug in the earphone, but I just hope my microphone will work like it does under Vista.

I tried to force-install the Vista driver onto my CQ50-142US under XP. It can install, but will not function correctly.

Also, is there anyone who encounter the wireless switch button issue on other CQ50? Normally, the button has a blue light when the wireless is on and has an orange light when the wireless is off. However, it always stays orange when under Windows XP. Although it is a minor issue, I actually wonder if there is a solution to this.

Interestingly, I found that HP official Vista driver for Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad will actually work under the Windows XP.

I think it's very similar to other CQ50 XP stories except the nasty Intel ICH9 I/O Controller that will make standard Windows XP install CD fail.

I appreciate your write-up, but how exactly did you get XP installed? I've tried both the nlite method and the USB floppy way. The nlite seemed to install, but nothing happened after the reboot-to-finish. The floppy never has worked, always the blue screen. What was the exact Intel driver that you picked? Thanks again for the info.
